Reporting Animal Cruelty, Neglect and Abuse
Failure to provide adequate food, water and shelter constitutes neglect.
The use of physical force sufficient to cause injury to an animal constitutes abuse.
Abuse and neglect to animals constitutes cruelty,
which is against the law in most states
You only have to suspect an animal is being neglected or mistreated in order to report it.
Contact your local POLICE DEPARTMENT and/or HUMANE SOCIETY.

Do you know what to do if you see an animal being abused?

Reporting Cruelty FAQ

WSPA releases grocery store survey on humane food choices
Do you want to know how well your favorite grocery stores stack up when it comes to offering animal friendly foods on their shelves? WSPA surveyed about 200 individual stores throughout the US and recorded the availability of humanely labeled dairy, eggs, meat and poultry products. The results were used to rank the 23 largest US grocery corporations according to both the quantity and quality of their humane food selection. Both Trader Joe's and Wal-Mart ranked far lower than their chief competitors and we need your help in urging them to offer more humane food choices in their stores. Take action now. Visit our website at EatHumane.org to see the results of the survey and to download WSPA's grocery store comment card and pocket food guide.

Dear Miss Jody:
These photos were taken on the day Asso. Prof. Therdchai and his team came to make the prosthetic leg and the last photo was on the 24th when his team came to visit Mosha. The colour of the prosthetic leg has been changed and will be adjusted to make Mosha feel comfortable. She even tries to pull the artificial leg back after the staff take it off her leg each day. She is now very possessive of her new leg.
Cheers!

Trader Joe's stops carrying eggs from California farm
Trader Joe's announced Thursday that it will stop carrying eggs from a central California farm where an animal rights group shot undercover video showing chickens being mistreated by workers.
Footage released earlier this week by the Chicago-based nonprofit Mercy for Animals showed hens at Gemperle Enterprises' farms confined in crowded metal cages with rotting bird corpses.

The time has come for animal lovers everywhere to demand accountability and reform of the horse racing industry.
The death of Eight Belles after finishing second at this year's Kentucky Derby is a horrible reminder of the toll race horses have taken recently in an increasingly dangerous sport. According to a recent study, an average of two horses die every day in horse racing. This loss is unacceptable.
The horse racing industry must reform to put the welfare and safety of horses first and foremost
if not, we will boycott the sport.

From Retiring to Rescuing
Alayne Marker and Steve Smith retired from their lucrative jobs 15 years early. The couple then moved to Montana and started The Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Sanctuary with their own savings.
"The Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Sanctuary in Montana
rescues and shelters disabled animals. Every animal who arrives at the sanctuary gets another chance to have a safe and loving home. Our residents include blind dogs, blind horses, deaf dogs, blind cats, and others with medical issues like muscular dystrophy.
Although these animals may have disabilities, they do not consider themselves handicapped. They just want to get on with life and enjoy themselves. Thanks to the support of the sanctuary's friends, that's what they get to do here."
The sanctuary is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit charitable organization that is supported entirely by private contributions. All donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.

Japan's Oldest Giant Panda, Ling Ling, Dies
Apr. 30, 2008
Associated Press

Ling Ling

TOKYO - Japan's oldest giant panda, Ling Ling, a longtime star at Tokyo's largest zoo and a symbol of friendship with China, died Wednesday of heart failure, zookeepers said.
Ling Ling was 22 years and seven months old, equivalent to about 70 human years, the Ueno Zoo said. It said he was the fifth-oldest known male panda in the world. Ling Ling began losing his appetite and strength last August because of his old age, and recently suffered from heart and kidney problems, zoo official Motoyasu Ida said.
Keepers and visitors mourned the panda, which was the zoo's most popular attraction for more than 15 years. Public broadcaster NHK showed many visitors writing condolence messages, with some brushing away tears. Ling Ling's portrait was displayed inside his cage, along with bouquets and offerings of his favorite bamboo shoots.
An autopsy found he died of heart failure, Ida said. Fukuji Sugimoto, chief panda keeper at the zoo, said he felt something was wrong as soon as he entered Ling Ling's cage early Wednesday. "He always turned around when I called Ling Ling.' This morning he didn't. I rushed to him and touched his head, and he was already cold. That broke my heart," Sugimoto said. "He was such a darling." Ling Ling died just one day after the zoo withdrew him from public view because of his worsening health.
Born at China's Beijing Zoo in 1985, Ling Ling came to Tokyo in 1992. He had traveled to Mexico three times in recent years for unsuccessful mating. Ling Ling was the only giant panda owned by Japan, with eight other pandas elsewhere in the country all loaned by China, according to media reports.
With Ling Ling's loss, Ueno Zoo is without a panda for the first time since 1972, when the first panda couple arrived from China to mark the signing of bilateral peace treaty. Ida said the zoo is currently consulting with the Foreign Ministry about obtaining another panda from China.
The regional newspaper Tokyo Shimbun reported Tuesday that Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda may ask Chinese President Hu Jintao to consider loaning a pair of pandas to Japan.
Giant pandas are one of the world's rarest animals, with about 1,600 living in the wild in China, mostly in Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces.

April, 2008
Dear Jody,
Just a quick email to update you on the news that many of you have patiently been waiting for. Madam Xiong (literally Madam “Bear”!) of the Sichuan Forestry Department has kept her promise of closing a farm before the end of March – and, in the final hours of this month, our newly rescued bears are here! At 8pm tonight (Monday, China time), three trucks carrying 28 terrified, emaciated, but soon-to-be-free Moon Bears drove through the gates of our sanctuary in Chengdu, bringing our new family members “home”.
The next few days and weeks are going to be frantically busy as our wonderful team of vets, nurses, bear managers and workers get to grips with pioritising those bears in most urgent need of medical attention and begin their magic of repairing damaged bodies and minds. As always, this is a time of emotional highs and lows as we cry inside for animals that have spent decades in cages on barbaric farms, but put tears and anger behind as we become the professionals the bears need us to be.
Our first priority has been to ensure the safety of our staff by securing the rusty, dilapidated cages of these tortured, understandably aggressive bears, before offering them simple pleasures which they have never experienced on the farms. Free access to clean water for the first time in their lives, fruit piled high and tasty medicated shakes which will start them on the healing process – preparing for emergency health checks and major surgeries so necessary to get them through. Even straw placed on the roof of their cruel crush cages will see them quickly pulling it through, making nests on unrelenting bars which have hurt and scarred their bone-thin bodies for years.
It is the best and worst of times for everyone here in Chengdu – not least the bears – and, in between this new rescue, we want to thank you for having the faith to stay with us and for now being a profound part of this latest good news. Please come back and visit my blog where you’ll see updates and photos whenever there’s time over this coming week. Take a quick break and visit so that you can join the bears as, together, we start the first tentative steps towards freedom.
Finally, please bear with us (excuse the pun) as we try to balance caring for the bears and keeping you updated. I know you’ll have questions, but we may not be able to respond to you all individually as we start working round the clock at the sanctuary. Please keep checking the blog and I’ll try to answer them as much as possible there.
These bears may not be “smiling” like Jasper and friends just yet – but experience tells us that most will pull through ….with a little luck, and time, on their side.
Bear hugs,
Jill

A Bear Named Watermelon

A bear named Watermelon in crush cage

"One of those bears was a handsome young male, who we’ve nick-named “Watermelon”. On arrival, this brave boy was clearly in agony with crippling back pain. He’d been rammed into a tiny, tiny cage, and all he had the energy to do was whimper quietly – and breathe.
Watermelon was cramped painfully on his side, his majestic head pressed flat against the unrelenting bars and his belly weeping a putrid mix of bile, blood and pus. His left forepaw was poking through the cruel bars to rest on the concrete floor outside, the only place it had to go. There was a gentleness about this beautiful bear that just broke our hearts. His breath was dangerously shallow, but the depth of his pleading brown eyes spoke of a thousand sorrows.
Among the melee, one of the bear workers noticed Watermelon wasn’t eating and offered him a piece of apple, then some banana on a long skewer. Widening his eyes, he sniffed at the fruit, but still he didn’t eat. It wasn’t until she gently lifted a piece of juicy watermelon to his lips that this beautiful boy slowly edged open his mouth and nibbled on the tender flesh – almost certainly the most delicious food he’d ever eaten. His whimpers gradually lessened. I’d like to think this small act of kindness gave him the will to fight on."

Protest against the "Farra do Boi"
Source: WSPA
One of the most savage rituals of cruelty toward animals is Brazil's Farra do Boi. Farra do boi, loosely translated as " Festival of the Oxen" or "Ox Fun Days", involves the torture- killing of several hundred oxen each year in more than thirty communities throughout the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. In other states of Brazil, the spectacle is denounced and has stirred violent protests.
Until recently, Farra do Boi occurred primarily during Easter week and on New Year's Day in remote coastal villages.

Today some communities hold weekly Farras to "celebrate" weddings, birthdays, soccer games and other special occasions. Prominent businessmen, citizens, cattle breeders, restaurateurs, and politicians often donate the oxen.

The Farra begins when the ox is driven from its pen and chased through the streets by crowds of villagers with sticks, knives, whips, stones, bamboo lances, and ropes. The attackers men, women, and children pursue the ox as it attempts to flee, even into the ocean.
WSPA sources in Brazil have seen cattle tormented in every conceivable way. The helpless animals are doused with gasoline and set on fire. Pepper is thrown into their eyes, which are often then gouged out. Participants break the animal's horns and legs and cut off their tales. Oxen may be stabbed or hit as many times as possible as long as the blows are not fatal, for the cattle must survive until the end. This torture may continue for THREE DAYS OR LONGER. Finally the animal is killed and the meat is divided among the participants to eat.

The horrors of Maoshan – Part 1

Monday, February 4, 2008, 07:34 PM
Recently, I visited Maoshan Live Animal Market in Guangzhou with two of our China team, Christie and Rainbow. Such visits are probably the hardest part of our work at Animals Asia, but they’re also among the most important. We must keep monitoring this situation and exposing the truth about these hell-holes. These are my notes from the visit:
It’s 8am and I just don’t know how Christie and Rainbow can cope with the pain. You feel it in every fibre of your body, as you breathe the rancid, acrid smell of disease and taste the dust of death and decay. It lingers for hours after you've left one of these obscene live animal markets in China.
The place is Maoshan Market in the southern province of Guangdong and even as the taxi pulls up outside the open courtyard the screams of terrified animals makes us wince. These cries echo around each avenue of the market until we finally meet the eyes of petrified dogs and cats that are minutes or hours from death. Panting from thirst and dehydration, crying with terror, confusion and pain, their suffering is profound. Sometimes their tails wag in hopeful anticipation that the soft apologies of people recording their pain will lead to release – until their eyes fade once again into hopeless reality and they turn away.
We promise they will never die in vain. Rainbow is saying “please look at the camera; let me turn your agony into change for the animals of the future”. I can only say sorry to the eyes that turn my way – and I do out loud – and try to reassure them that their next life will be better.
Hundreds, possibly thousands, of dogs are piled into tiny wire mesh cages in pyramids teetering high into the air on the backs of the trucks. Cats are stacked in cages that wobble precariously on industrial weigh-scales as their mass of body weight is calculated for the local restaurants.
Jill's Blog Continues

The horrors of Maoshan – part 2
The market also doubles as a slaughterhouse – a round metal drum with orange spikes used for “de-furring” the cats and dogs sits just outside a burning cauldron that will be cooking their meat for customers towards lunchtime.

"Dear Friends of Jungle Friends,
It’s birthday time again at Jungle Friends! Now that February has rolled in, we’re officially in the ‘birthday zone’ counting down to Kari’s birthday on February 24th! In 2007, Jungle Friends provided a safe sanctuary home for 21 more monkeys, and still more monkeys will be released to Jungle Friends from another lab very soon. So, Kari has lots to celebrate on her birthday this year, and lots more work to look forward to in 2008! Once again, on the top of Kari’s birthday wish list is more tools and supplies to keep everyone busy working for the monkeys. She’s also noticed that the toy box is getting a bit low. The monkeys would love to have some new toys to shake, rattle and roll."

Meet Pat

Pat At Jungle Friends

Pat arrived at Jungle Friends on January 27, 2008 from Plano I.S.D’s Outdoor Learning Center in Plano, Texas. Pat had been placed there in 1996, when the City of Dallas Animal Services Department received a call that a spider monkey had been discovered sitting on a fence in the freezing cold. Pat’s fingers, toes and tail all had severe frostbite. Pat would sit in the corner and bang herself in the head with her back foot. All but one of the veterinarians consulted wanted to euthanize Pat! Fortunately, that one felt that Pat deserved a chance to live and recover. All of her toes, all but one finger on her left hand, and the tip of her tail had to be amputated. Pat adapted very well to her loss. Three days after her surgery she was bouncing around and hanging from her tail. She finally began to eat, and after about a week Pat’s psychological well-being was much improved. Pat is now at JungleFriends.org. Please go and read the story of how she got there and what is happening with her now.

Dear Natural Resources Defense Council Supporters,
Your generous support got us back to federal court, where we've scored another big victory for whales -- this time over the President of the United States! Last night, a federal judge struck down a waiver issued by the White House that would have exempted the U.S. Navy from obeying a key environmental law during sonar training exercises that endanger whales.
In doing so, the court affirmed the bedrock principle that we do NOT live under an imperial presidency. Both the White House and the military must obey and uphold our environmental laws. President Bush's waiver was a last-ditch attempt to let the Navy unleash an onslaught of military sonar off the coast of southern California -- home to five endangered species of whales -- without taking precautions to protect marine mammals from a lethal bombardment of sound.
Last month, the same judge -- U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper -- ordered the Navy to put safeguards in place during the sonar maneuvers in order to protect marine mammals from needless injury and death. Shortly after that ruling, President Bush issued his "emergency" waiver, attempting to override the court's order. In last night's ruling, Judge Cooper called the Navy's so-called emergency "a creature of its own making," and reaffirmed that the military can train effectively without needlessly harming whales. The Navy's maneuvers would take place near the Channel Islands -- one of the world's most sensitive marine environments. The Navy itself estimates that the booming sonar would harass or harm marine mammals some 170,000 times -- and cause permanent injury in more than 400 cases.
The far-reaching precautions imposed on the Navy by Judge Cooper include a ban on mid-frequency sonar within 12 miles of the California coast -- a zone that is heavily used by migrating whales and dolphins -- and between the Channel Islands. Make no mistake: we must be fully prepared to keep fighting for those humane restrictions -- especially if the White House or Navy appeals this decision to a higher court.
Your support and activism have taken us this far. I know you will continue standing with us in the courtroom battles ahead -- until that day when whales no longer need to die for the sake of military practice.... Here's a great segment about our victory from today's
"Morning Edition" on National Public Radio.
Sincerely,
Frances Beinecke

Finally, Justin Phillips, shelter supervisor/behavior supervisor of the SPCA of Monterey County, Calif., was also part of the BAD RAP team."
Meet The Michael Vick Rescue Dogs
No group of pit bulls has received as much media attention as the dogs from former NFL player Michael Vick's yard. While it's certain nobody would've known about these victimized dogs had they not been part of a fallen sports figure's dog fighting venture, they earned celebrity in their own right by surviving two certain deaths, thanks to a large scale rescue effort led, in part, by the federal government - a first of its kind.
Public opinion fell strongly in favor of helping the dogs. In this landmark animal welfare case, federal prosecuting attorneys, federal agents, the USDA, six Virginia animal shelters, a court appointed animal law expert and several rescue organizations including BAD RAP all teamed together to reach the goal of evaluating 49 fight bust victims and then sending them to new and better lives with rescue organizations around the country.
In the past, shelters have been encouraged to put all fight bust dogs to their deaths because it was assumed that they were each going to be dangerous, uncontrollable animals. They’ve been called ‘Kennel Trash’ and accused of taking up space normally reserved for other dogs. Evaluating them as individuals revealed new information about dogs from fight busts and helped shatter old myths previously used to condemn them.

NRDC Action Fund
The Bush Administration has just handed down its long-awaited “License to Kill” rule for wolves.
This is the equivalent of a death sentence for hundreds of endangered gray wolves in Greater Yellowstone and across the Northern Rockies. Rest assured that NRDC will be going to court immediately to challenge and block this cruel attack on America’s wildlife. At the same time, our partner organization, the NRDC Action Fund, is moving swiftly to mobilize nationwide opposition and force the White House to call off the guns. The Action Fund has produced a powerful ad that will run in the national edition of The New York Times within the next week, where it will alert both the public and Congress in time to stop the slaughter.
Please click here to view a preview of the ad. Thanks to this ad, millions of Americans will soon learn that the Bush Administration is planning to spend our tax dollars to slaughter hundreds of wolves -- while they are still protected under the Endangered Species Act. And thousands of them will go online and urge their members of Congress to unite in opposition to this outrageous attack on an endangered species. Working together we’re going to give America’s wolves a fighting chance. Thank you, as always, for making all our work possible through your most generous support.
Sincerely,

Dear WSPA Supporter
For some, it's the ache of an empty stomach. For others, it's the soreness of an open wound, the pain of a devastating infection, the sharp sting of an icy cold winter night, the boredom and loneliness of life in a tiny cage, or the terror and confusion of being shot at, poisoned, and abused.
For billions of animals around the world, hurt is a part of everyday life. But you can change this. Make your 2008 WSPA membership gift and watch the video (optional) to see how you can make a difference.

ASPCA ANNOUNCES ARREST OF SUSPECT IN BRONX KITTEN KILLING
January 18, 2008
In late November 2007, the ASPCA was alerted to suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a stray kitten who had been socialized, cared for and fed by the residents and employees of a building at 1581 Fulton Avenue, The Bronx. Witnesses told ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement investigators that 17-year-old Robert Tull, a resident of the area, struck the 4 1/2-month-old male kitten with a garbage pail lid on the night of the kitten’s death. Back at ASPCA headquarters in Manhattan, an examination of the kitten’s remains proved that he had suffered head trauma and that he had been drowned. ASPCA Special Agent Patrick Breen arrested Tull without incident on December 17, just a short distance away from the Fulton Avenue building. At 17, Tull is considered an adult by New York City law. He has been charged with felony aggravated animal cruelty and faces up to two years in prison and a $2,000 fine. It is a well-documented phenomenon that those who hurt animals without provocation—especially young people—often move on to commit acts of violence against humans. Please report animal abuse in New York City by contacting the ASPCA's anonymous tip line at (877) THE-ASPCA. To learn how to report cruelty elsewhere, visit the ASPCA's Report Cruelty section.

Stop Deceptive Labeling of "Natural" Meat
Have you noticed how confusing meat labels have become? What does "naturally raised" or "natural" mean when applied to a side of beef? Well, not much, as it turns out. Yet the federal government is about to approve the use of the term "naturally raised" -- even though it doesn't mean that the animal was physically unaltered, able to roam freely, or graze on pasture. It will mean it didn't get growth promoters, although there is no verification of even that more limited claim. The existing term "natural" only means that no artificial ingredients were added during processing.

Zimbabwe's elephants fair game to feed sports fans
Zimbabwe plans to kill hundreds of elephants and turn them into biltong, a local dried meat snack usually enjoyed with a beer in front of a game of soccer or rugby, officials here have said. "It is in our plans. We plan to start this year," Zimbabwe National Parks director-general Morris Mtsambiwa was quoted as saying in the state-owned Herald newspaper. At least 500 elephants will be shot, skinned and their flesh dried and processed.

Vick's Prison Sentence May Be Shortened
Michael Vick might be back sooner than we think.
Humane Society and PETA picketers better keep those posters ready, as there's a chance Michael Vick could be back on the field for the 2009 season. Yahoo! Sports is reporting that the Falcons quarterback could end up serving as few as 12 months of his 23 month sentence thanks to his entry into a drug rehab program in prison. By connecting the dots, the story speculates that Vick could be back in the NFL for the 2009 season, as he would likely wrap up his sentence early next year.
Apparently the drug treatment program, which is only in place at the Leavenworth, Kan., federal penitentiary, allows inmates to wipe off up to a year of their sentence if they complete the drug treatment program. Vick has tested positive for marijuana, which ended up likely adding time to his prison sentence. But now that same drug test might end up helping him cut time from his current sentence. Vick has to be in the program for a year, which apparently hasn't begun, so he's likely looking at a February or March 2009 release.
Now, there are several other obstacles to Vick getting back onto an NFL field. Commissioner Roger Goodell will have to end his indefinite suspension, he'll likely have to pass frequent drug tests, and probably most importantly, he'll have to find a team willing to have a dog killer on their roster, with all the bad publicity that will come with it. But getting his prison sentence over six months or more before the 2009 season does make it much more likely that Vick will end up getting back onto the field.

Dear Jody,
The crew members of the Esperanza (Spanish for "hope") are true heroes of the ocean. Having trumped through three typhoons, at this very moment they are seeking out the Japanese whaling fleet -- in hunting grounds equivalent to twice the landmass of the United States. This expedition is no easy task. It requires fuel, food, logistics, skill and guts -- lots and lots of guts.
Help the crew of the Esperanza save the whales »
Japan has responded to international pressure, and announced that humpbacks will not be hunted this season. But whaling has not ended. Japan still plans to murder 985 Minke and Fin whales this year. The cycle of greed behind the global whaling industry drove one whale population after another toward oblivion. It is still not known if some species will ever recover, even after decades of protection. Saving one species is not enough. We all need to do more NOW to stop the hunt forever.
Your donation to Greenpeace can help the crew members of the Esperanza succeed in protecting whales!

The Esperanza in the Southern Ocean.

It costs $247,000 a month to keep the Esperanza and crew on the heels of the Japanese whaling fleet. But with your support, Greenpeace can continue to fund this incredible effort.

Arna the Elephant
Stardust's Arna officially a killer
By Rhett Watson

Arna rocks back and forth in an effort to relieve boredom

ARNA the ELEPHANT 2007
Arna has been mired in controversy since animal liberationists took civil action against the circus in 2002, alleging animal cruelty. Animal Liberation NSW fought its cruelty case for two years, but the matter was dismissed in court. Since then the group has lobbied councils around the state to ban circus acts that include wild animals. Animal Liberation NSW executive director Mark Pearson said last night Arna was a "time bomb'' ready to explode. "It's like any highly intelligent wild animal incarcerated - they're under extreme distress all of the time,'' he said. "When you put an extremely powerful, essentially wild animal that can't be domesticated that can only be tamed or broken in, well then you have a time bomb ready to go off. "To train an elephant to perform ridiculous tricks like Arna does, they have to go through a great deal of brutality. When all different things come together, they will get revenge,'' he said. "It's very interesting that they kill their trainers first," Mr. Pearson said.

Monkeys Retiring From Laboratory Research
More research...
or a new life?
This marmoset is one of many primates in labs awaiting funding for a sanctuary home
Ernie is one of the monkeys in jeopardy.

"Dear Friends of Jungle Friends
One of the laboratories called us last week with some bad news; we need to move their monkeys to Jungle Friends as soon as possible or they will be sold back into research! Originally we thought we had until spring, but that is no longer the case. There are 5 marmosets and 4 juvenile squirrel monkeys at risk. We are anxious to get these little guys out of danger.
We need $2,500 more for the indoor enclosures that will provide these monkeys with a safe haven. The manufacturer has promised he will rush our order as quickly as possible; we just need the funding that will allow us to place the order.  If I can assure the ‘powers that be’ that we will be able to accept these monkeys within 30 days, they will not sell them!  Please help me make that call to the lab by making a donation today!"

Stop Fast Food Chains From Using Paper From Endangered Forests
Packaging symbolizes the disposable society we have become. More than half of all paper produced in the United States is used in paper packaging. Fast Food Industry giants including Yum! Brands (which brings you Pizza Hut, KFC, Taco Bell and more) are big buyers of paper packaging from the forests of the Southern US. With nearly 100 packaging mills in the South, forests are being destroyed to bring you fried chicken, burgers, fries and super-sized convenience in a glut of wrappers, boxes and cups. On top of this, millions of pounds of food packaging waste litter our roadways, clog our landfills and spoil our quality of life. Over half of landfill waste is paper and wood products. Send an email to Yum Brands CEO David Novak asking him to reduce the company's packaging, stop using paper from endangered Southern forests and use more recycled paper!

Care2 Action Alert: Speak out against animal cruelty at Mendes Calf Ranch!

Did you know the dairy products you buy could be associated with baby calves being taken from their mothers just hours after birth and shipped away to live in cramped, filthy crates with barely enough room to move?

This shocking scenario is a sad reality for the young calves at Mendes Calf Ranch in Tipton, California. Take Action >>

The calves live by themselves in crates so small they can’t even turn around or lie down naturally. They have to contort their bodies simply to move around in the small space, which is often covered with their own excrement.

This confinement violates animal cruelty laws! Sign the petition to Free Baby Mendes – and the up to 12,000 other calves that Mendes confines every day of the year.

Land O’Lakes and Challenge Dairy are two of the major dairy producers who use milk from calves who were confined at Mendes Calf Ranch.

Let dairy corporations Land O’Lakes and Challenge Dairy know that these practices are unnecessary — and unacceptable!

Thank you for alerting Land O’Lakes and Challenge Dairy about what's going on at Mendes Calf Ranch — and telling them consumers won’t tolerate this animal cruelty!

Change Wendy's Frosty Attitude Towards Hens
Dear Jody,
Wendy's attitude toward animal welfare is, well...frosty. After months of discussions with The HSUS, the company still lags behind its competitor, Burger King, when it comes to reducing cruelty to egg-laying hens. The freeze extends to concerned consumers, too -- now Wendy's refuses even to accept email on this issue! In March, Burger King began phasing in the use of cage-free eggs. Yet all of the eggs that Wendy's uses come from birds crammed in cages so tiny they can barely move. Since Wendy's is as chilly towards emails from customers as it is towards animal welfare,  it's critical that you call Wendy's right now at 1-800-443-7266, ext. 2032.Ask the company to follow in Burger King's modest footsteps and start moving away from eggs from caged hens. Then let us know you called here.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

  • Battery-cage eggs are produced by cruelly confining hens in barren cages too small for the birds even to spread their wings.
  • The least Wendy's should do to reduce animal cruelty in its supply chain is to follow in Burger King's footsteps and implement the same modest improvements that Burger King has already made.

Please also let your friends and family know how they can help, too. Thank you for all you do for animals!

AAF Rescues Two More Moon Bears in Vietnam.
Safe at last; our Tam Dao family has grown to five.

Dear Jody,
Great news! Because of you and your ongoing faith and support, two beautiful Moon Bears are now safe and sound at last in their new home at our Sanctuary in Vietnam. These two gorgeous girls have spent almost four years in a cramped cage in the care of the Forest Protection Department after being rescued from smugglers.
Thankfully the FPD officers realised they could not provide the proper care the bears needed, so asked if we could take them at our new Moon Bear Rescue Centre near Hanoi. Of course, we said yes, and now the three mischievous cubs that joined us in June have two foster mums! To read the full story of the rescue and to see photos of our new family members, please visit:

Soon I hope to be sending you more exciting news from Vietnam - the start of our major rescue will see a group of lucky bears enjoying freedom from years of suffering and torment on the farms.
Until then, as always, thanks from the heart on behalf of these grateful bears and those to come,
for your faith and generosity.

Support a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare and protect animals like these.

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged on the way its animals are treated." - Mahatma Gandhi
Hi Jody,

Animals give us so much - loyal companionship, productivity in work situations and insights into the beauty and mystery of nature. That's why it's so hard to fathom how animal cruelty could be so shockingly prevalent - both in the U.S. and the rest of the world.

Support a world where animal welfare matters, and animal cruelty ends >>

All animals should be able to live their lives free from misery. But instead they struggle in a world that is often indifferent.

For example, the illegal and inhumane trade in wildlife and wildlife parts is a soaring black market worth $10 billion a year. An estimated 80 percent of the world’s cats and dogs are unwanted and suffer from hunger, disease, neglect and persecution as pests. And, though seldom considered, animals are also affected to an enormous degree by disasters, both natural and human-caused.

This global problem requires a global solution. Take Action!

The road toward better animal welfare is through cooperation, information and a strong international commitment. Urge the United Nations to adopt a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare >>

A Universal Declaration by the UN would:

  • Recognize animals as sentient beings, capable of suffering and experiencing pain.
  • Recognize that animal welfare is an issue of importance as a part of the social development of nations.
  • Act as a catalyst for better animal welfare provisions worldwide.

The declaration would have a real, long-term impact on the welfare of billions of animals worldwide! Your signature will be one more toward the goal of 10 million signatures on the "Animals Matter to Me" petition. Sign now >>

Thank you for taking part in the most ambitious global initiative on animal welfare that has ever been attempted!

California Action Alert   8/15/07
Urgent Help Needed for Kangaroos
SB 880, a bill that would allow the sale of kangaroo skins and body parts in the state of California, has passed the Senate and is now facing a full vote in the Assembly. If this bill passes, it would invalidate a law implemented in 1970 to protect kangaroos by prohibiting the sale of their skins. Sadly, a similar bill passed the legislature last session that reversed similar protections for alligators. It is very important that the same fate does not now befall kangaroos.
Cruelty in the Outback as detailed by Savethekangaroo.com,
Kangaroos are shot at night in the vast outback, miles from civilization and away from public scrutiny. Hunters are supposed to adhere to a Code of Practice, a flimsy guideline document which is neither legally-enforceable nor linked to the Australian Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. According to the Code, to kill kangaroos ‘humanely’ hunters should shoot them once in the head, but frequently this does not happen and the animals may be shot in the throat, the neck, or have their jaws blown off. The Australian RSPCA released a report last year which concluded that at the very least 100,000 adult kangaroos each year are not killed ‘humanely’, but admitted that number was a conservative estimate as it did not take into account the unquantifiable number of injured animals who escape only to die slow, agonizing deaths from their injuries.
Official numbers for the kill do not include the baby kangaroos who also die as a result, the worthless ‘waste’ of the industry. Each time a female kangaroo is killed, it is likely she will have two baby ‘joeys’ - one in the pouch and one ‘at foot’. Tiny joeys are pulled from their dead mothers’ pouches and stamped on, clubbed, decapitated, shot or simply left on the ground to die. Older joeys hop away into the night invariably to die of starvation, predation, cold or neglect. Similar hunting methods are used in Canada’s seal hunt; both California and Federal laws prohibit the sale of seal products from Canada because of the cruel killing methods used.
How You Can Help
If you live in California, please help maintain protections for kangaroos in the state by doing the following:
1. Please call, email, or fax your state Assembly member today and ask that he or she vote
NO on SB 880.
For your legislators' contact information, go to leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg
2. Also, contact the Governor and urge him to veto (oppose) SB 880 should it pass the Assembly.

National U.S. Animal Cruelty Maps
"Pet-Abuse.Com now offers interactive animal cruelty maps on a national level, to help provide the media and the public a visual representation of where specific types of cruelty are being reported. Like the local and street-level maps, a colored icon appears where an incident of animal cruelty has occurred. The national maps allow you to display only cases of a particular type, starting from a specific year. We are pleased to finally make this available to the public. Since the mapping project began in 2006, we have manually mapped over 6,000 cases of animal cruelty in the United States based on latitude and longitude of the incident location. Using this new tool, we hope to be able to continue to assist law enforcement, researchers and task forces in recognizing patterns and problem areas for criminal animal cruelty."

Dear Jody,
"In the wake of the high-profile indictment of Michael Vick, the nation has been awakened to the cruelty of animal fighting. Members of Congress, corporate leaders, and people like you are speaking out. And Louisiana and New Mexico enacted laws this year to outlaw cockfighting -- the last two states to join the fold. Online retailer Amazon is now in the lonely position of promoting animal fighting activities. It's the only online retailer of subscriptions to animal fighting magazines in the United States, and these magazines advertise the sale of fighting animals and cockfighting weapons -- sales made illegal by federal law! The Feathered Warrior even advertised fighting dogs from a dogfighter whose operation makes the enterprise described in the Michael Vick indictment look like a bunch of amateurs.

This nonsense from Amazon must stop --
tell them so right now.

Amazon sells subscriptions to cockfighting magazines like The Gamecock and The Feathered Warrior and claims the right to sell dogfighting videos. These materials are not only offensive because of the cruelty they glorify, but their shipment is also a federal felony under the recently-enacted Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act. Amazon claims that its commercial sale of these publications is protected by the First Amendment. But the First Amendment does not protect companies advertising illegal contraband, and that's exactly what the magazines sold by Amazon are doing. Dogs and chickens suffer grievous injuries or death in fights produced for depraved fun and shameful profit. Please ask Amazon right now to stop selling animal fighting magazines. And don't forget to tell your friends and family how they can help, too."
Thank you for all you do for animals.

We Did It! Nike Drops Vick

Many people have been painfully aware of dogfighting for years..
here is something for those just starting out.
Pit Bulls
Mark Ebner
As a result of his investigations of animal cruelty in 1996,
Mark Ebner won the Genesis Award for his syndicated newspaper article PIT BULLIES
JodysJungle presents this article, in its entirety, with the permission of the author.
"Spanky lies bleeding from his torn ear and neck. His 250-pound owner lumbers over, grabs the dog by the skin of his back, and with both hands slams him into a chain-link fence. Spanky bounces off and lands in the dirt where he curls up, whimpering and pissing in fear. The man then rams a work-booted foot into the dog's rib cage, and Spanky lies motionless."

I have received requests for petition sites concerning dogfighting and/or Michael Vick,
here a just a few to get you started.

Dogs and Shelters Pay the Price for Dogfighting

Ask Nike to drop Michael Vick as a spokesperson immediately.

Tell the NFL to Suspend Michael Vick

Michael Vick's "Rape Stand"
and other equipment used in dogfights

July, 2007
This week, a federal grand jury indicted NFL star quarterback Michael Vick and three cohorts on felony dogfighting charges. The abuses described in the indictment are almost beyond belief, and include a report of Vick being consulted before the execution of the losing dog "by wetting the dog down with water and electrocuting the animal."
The indictment also describes "the execution of approximately eight dogs that did not perform well in "testing" sessions ... by methods including hanging, drowning and slamming at least one dog's body to the ground."
Atlanta Falcons Quarterback Michael Vick should be suspended from the NFL immediately!
The NFL expressed “disappointment” and said, “We believe that all concerned should allow the legal process to determine the facts.” That’s just not good enough. The alleged acts were not petty or harmless; they were nothing short of gruesome and barbaric.
PLEASE sign the petition to the NFL today, and tell the league to suspend Michael Vick.
Suspend NFL Quarterback Michael Vick for Dogfighting!
The excecution of the dog is the least of it. Most dogs are left to bleed to death, some are tossed in the trash to die. There is unimaginable suffering during the training and the fighting. Dogfighting is despicable in so many ways, if you think you want to learn more and get involved, be sure to
Google "dog fighting bait"
to learn about stolen pets, innocent victims of dog fighting.
We have so much more to learn, but I really don't recommend it, it hurts too much.

Mans inhumanity never ceases to amaze me.

Dear Jody,
I just wanted to share with you some good news – the Animals Asia team has three new family members and they couldn’t be more adorable. Thanks to your generous support, we have been able to rescue three tiny Moon Bear cubs that were being smuggled into Vietnam – they are now safe and sound and enjoying the good life at our rescue centre near Hanoi.
So far, it’s been quite a tough year for us in Vietnam – unexpected construction delays have meant that we have had to postpone the beginning of our major rescue of 200 farmed Moon Bears in Vietnam until later this year. These rescued bears will be central to our education efforts, so despite the frustrations, long-term, we are still on track to end bear farming in this country.
Vet Nurse Candice and Senior Bear Manager Annemarie are certainly going to have their hands full looking after these little bundles of energy in the meantime!

Four Paws Foundation Animal Rights Activists
Free Bulgaria's Last Three Dancing Bears
Associated Press Jun. 15, 2007
SOFIA, Bulgaria - After a lifetime of brutal treatment, including walking on burning embers, Bulgaria's last three dancing bears will get to rest their paws at a mountain sanctuary, in an apparent end to the centuries-old performance tradition in the Balkans. Activists on Friday bought the freedom of Mima, 8, Misho, 19, and Svetla, 17. Bulgaria is believed to have been the last country in the Balkans where dancing bears still performed, even though the practice was outlawed in 1993, when there were 20 to 30 such bears in the country. The three bears will join another 20 brown bears on Mount Rila at a 30-acre sanctuary for former dancing bears 110 miles south of Sofia.
"Our aim is to make their life more bearable in their remaining years," Ioana Tomescu of the Austria-based Four Paws Foundation, which created the sanctuary, told the Associated Press. Throughout the Balkans, families - mostly among the Gypsy or Roma community - have long earned a living through performing bears. But the techniques to train them led the practice to be banned, and animal rights activists have moved to find the bears new homes. The bears are captured while still young. Their nose or lips are pierced, and a metal ring attached to a chain is inserted; the pain ensures instant submission. The cubs are forced to walk on burning embers or a hot sheet of metal, and hop from one hind leg to the other in order to escape the burning, while their trainer beats a drum. The process is repeated until the bear learns to connect the drum to the pain. Because dancing bears are illegal, authorities could simply have taken Mima, Misho and Svelta away from their owners in the eastern village of Getsovo. Instead, the Four Paws Foundation decided to pay for their freedom by giving their owners small grants to set up new businesses. It did not reveal how much was paid. In return, the owners signed declarations pledging never to take up the bear dancing business again.

Rare blue lobster found at mouth of Conn. river
Associated Press
Jun. 12, 2007

Blue the Beautiful

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Call it crustacean discrimination.
A lobster caught last weekend by Steve Hatch and his uncle Robert Green was spared from being cooked and ripped apart on a plate because of its color. The 1 1/2-pound clawed creature is bright blue, the result of an extremely rare genetic mutation. It turned up Sunday morning in one of Hatch and Green's lobster traps at the mouth of the Thames River. "I've heard about them but this is the first one I've ever seen," Hatch told the Day of New London newspaper. Later that afternoon, he put the lobster in a cooler and brought it to the Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration, where it will live out its days in an elementary school classroom for children to learn about.
Catherine Ellis, curator of fish and invertebrates at the aquarium, said only one in 3 million lobsters are "true blue," meaning their color is the result of genetics and not the environment.
The one caught Sunday will join two other blue lobsters at the aquarium. Researchers at the University of Connecticut found that the blue coloring occurs when lobsters produce an excessive amount of protein because of a genetic mutation. But if blue lobsters are cooked like their red brethren, they too turn red, Ellis said.

Yellowstone
The Bush administration wants to triple the number of noisy, polluting snowmobiles roaring through America's oldest national park. But we have a narrow window of opportunity right now to speak out against this dangerous proposal, which ignores warnings from Park Service experts and puts Yellowstone's wildlife, visitors and staff at risk. Please go to Take Action and tell the Bush administration to abandon its reckless plan and instead protect the park's iconic wildlife, clear views and natural serenity. Four consecutive National Park Service studies have shown that only a complete ban on snowmobiles in Yellowstone can adequately protect the park's natural values and safeguard the health of visitors and staff. Yet the Bush administration recently proposed increasing the average number of snowmobiles in Yellowstone from 250 to 720 per day. Seven former National Park Service directors have signed a letter urging Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne to reject this scheme. The administration should instead ban snowmobiles while expanding the use of environmentally friendly "snowcoaches," which are quieter, less polluting and offer breathtaking panoramic views of the park. Thank you for helping to safeguard Yellowstone and all of our national parks, which are such an important part of America's natural heritage.
Sincerely,
Frances Beinecke

Polar bears are in such trouble that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service has proposed listing them as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act. So why does this same agency allow American trophy hunters to kill Canadian polar bears and bring them home?
Tell the Fish and Wildlife Service to stop issuing polar bear trophy permits immediately! Canadian polar bear populations -- like those in America -- are declining due to global warming and other threats. In fact, the World Conservation Union's Polar Bear Specialist Group predicts that polar bear populations could drop 30% in the next 35-50 years and that polar bears may disappear entirely from most of their range within 100 years.
Hunting polar bears is already banned in the U.S. But half of the world's polar bears live in Canada, where hunting is legal. And due to a huge loophole in the Marine Mammal Protection Act, American trophy hunters can travel to Canada, kill a polar bear, and bring back polar bear trophies. We may not be able to stop Canada from allowing hunting, but we can stop the U.S. from allowing Americans to import polar bear trophies. Please act today and urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to stop issuing polar bear trophy permits immediately!

Polar bears already face a daunting future because of global warming, oil and gas exploration and toxic chemical pollution. But there's another threat that many Americans aren't aware of – trophy hunting. The United States does not allow sport hunting of polar bears in their Alaskan habitat. But more than half of the world's polar bears live in Canada, where hunting is legal. And due to a huge loophole in the Marine Mammal Protection Act, American trophy hunters can travel to Canada, kill a polar bear, and bring back polar bear trophies. From 2002-2005, a total of 298 requests were made by US citizens to import sport hunted polar bear trophies from Canada. Of these, 252 - a staggering 85 percent - were issued. We may not be able to stop Canada from allowing hunting, but we can stop the U.S. from allowing Americans to import polar bear trophies. Please act today and urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to stop issuing polar bear trophy permits immediately!

Beautiful weather in California today, I decided to water the yard when I spotted something next to the fence. A beautiful little fawn waiting for it's mom to return. I didn't want to frighten the fawn so no watering occurred today. This little sweetie waited all day, what a well behaved child.

Manatee Mother and Calf

Ask State Agency to Make Manatee Management Plan Stronger
Urge Revision of Imperiled Species Listing/Delisting Rule
To JodysJungle.com
When the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWCC) adopted new imperiled species listing/delisting criteria, they incorporated the international criteria for "endangered," but they elected to call those species that met the endangered criteria "threatened" instead of "endangered." As a result, the FWCC voted to downlist manatees to "threatened" status. We are highly critical of this move, as are a host of other environmental organizations and eminent scientists.
Now, the FWCC has drafted a Manatee Management Plan (Plan), which is the final step in the species' reclassification from "endangered" to "threatened." However, the current Plan will not ensure adequate protection for manatees and, together with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's recent recommendation to also downlist manatees at the federal level, the Plan will greatly hamper our chance of securing the manatee's future in the face of increasing human-related threats.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has recommended downlisting the manatee due to political pressure. An April editorial in The Bradenton Herald said, "The declassification is not being made because the manatee has made a 'landmark' recovery, as the USFWS' field supervisor asserted. Rather, it is a concession to the boat, dock-building and development interests that have lobbied for relaxing manatee protection rules for years. In the anti-environment posture of the Bush administration facing term limits, it has finally found a friendly reception."
The two greatest threats to the manatee's long-term survival are:
A growing number of boats on Florida's already dangerous waters
The probable future loss of both natural and artificial warm water habitat.
Ironically, because of these threats, both the state and federal governments are projecting substantial to catastrophic decline in the manatee population unless strong new protections are implemented.
Act Now! Click this link to send a quick and easy online letter to FWCC Executive Director Ken Haddad and Florida Governor Charlie Crist, asking them to revise Florida's imperiled species listing/delisting rule and to retain the manatee's current "endangered" status. In addition, the letter asks them to make the Manatee Management Plan much stronger.
The formal comment period for the Management Plan is from May 7, 2007 - June 14, 2007. Please send the letter immediately and ask your family and friends to do the same. Thank you for your help on this important issue for manatees!

Take Action before Wednesday, April 25, 2007
Two pieces of legislation critical to the welfare of America’s wild horses will come under consideration this week in Congress. Your help is urgently needed to push them through. Please call your members of Congress in support of these two measures.
1) Have your U.S. Representative vote YES on H.R. 249
Contact Information
This Thursday, April 26, H.R. 249, which would restore the prohibition on the commercial sale and slaughter of wild horses and burros, will come for a vote before the US House of Representatives. Please contact your U.S. Representative and urge them to vote ‘Yes’ on H.R. 249
2) Have Senate Commerce Committee members Vote YES on S. 311
Contact Information
This Wednesday, April 25, 2007, the Senate Commerce Committee will consider S. 311, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. It is critical that all Committee members, including cosponsors of the bill, hear from constituents urging them to vote in favor of S. 311 and to stand strong against any misinformation that is being spread by the pro-horse slaughter lobby.

Could your old dishes be making you or your pet sick?
Lethal pet food is big news everywhere. The wheat gluten in the food is contaminated by melamine, a slow-release fertilizer also used to make plastics. Collectors have a special concern. Hard plastic melamine dishes have been made since 1937. The first really popular melamine dinner set was designed by Russel Wright in 1944. By the 1950s most people referred to melamine dishes by the brand name Melmac. They were unbreakable but scratched and stained and were out of favor by the late 1970s. But they are collected now and used. Are they safe? Does the hard plastic have any of the problems of the gluten mixture? Is it dangerous to heat Melmac dishes in a microwave or dishwasher? Our advice--- For now, use ceramic or stainless steel dishes for your pets and the family.

Help Stop the Elephant Cull in South Africa
Between 1966 and 1994 more than 16,000 elephants were killed in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, as a method of 'population control'. A moratorium on elephant culling was thankfully put in place in 1995. However, it now seems that elephant culling is once again in the cards for South Africa’s elephants.
On 28th February, 2007, Born Free was deeply disappointed to learn that the South African Minister for Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Marthinus van Schalwyck, had announced that as part of the new Draft Norms and Standards on Elephant Management, culling would be one of the options considered. Born Free is extremely concerned about this decision, which not only has serious implications for South Africa’s elephants, but also for the wider elephant population.
